Bangladesh Elections 2026 have delivered a historic political shift as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a two-third majority in the 13th parliamentary elections. According to Bangladeshi media reports, BNP and its allies won 209 out of 299 contested seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second-largest party with 68 seats. The elections were held alongside a national referendum, where approximately 66–67% of voters supported constitutional reforms under the proposed July National Charter. Led by Tarique Rahman, BNP has positioned law and order, governance reforms, and women’s empowerment as key priorities. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rejected the election results, calling them politically staged and questioning voter turnout figures. Allegations of irregularities and isolated incidents of violence were also reported, including arrests over fake voting attempts. The referendum could significantly reshape Bangladesh’s political and constitutional structure. Proposed reforms include strengthening institutional balance, limiting executive concentration of power, introducing structural parliamentary changes, and enhancing governance transparency. With over 127 million registered voters across 64 districts and more than 42,000 polling stations, this election marks one of the largest democratic exercises in South Asia. Notably, overseas postal voting was introduced for the first time, benefiting millions of expatriate workers. This election comes 18 months after the student-led movement that ended Sheikh Hasina’s two-decade political dominance — making this vote not just electoral, but transformational.
