(30 Apr 1996) Natural Sound Russian IFOR tanks were forced to intervene in a tense standoff Tuesday between Muslims and Serbs near the northern Bosnian town of Celic. Several hundred Muslim refugees trying to return to their former hometown of Koraj, now held by Serbs, were stopped by an angry crowd. Tension is high following the killing yesterday of two Muslims in a similar incident in central Bosnia. Military helicopters patrolled the hilly road here Tuesday, near the north-eastern Bosnian town of Celic. A tense standoff developed when hundreds of Muslims, some reports say up to six hundred, tried to come down over the hills and move toward the Serb held town of Koraj. To the east of Celic, in a no-man's land between Serb and Muslim held territory, a group of around 75 Serbs was waiting for the Muslims. The Serbs armed with handguns, sticks and stones blocked the path. Russian troops in the multi-national peace force were positioned between the rival crowds. Four Russian IFOR tanks and several U-S and Russian vehicles were also used to block the two roads at the site. IFOR was refusing to let anyone cross the 100 metres (yards) of land separating the two groups. The U-N says the situation was extremely tense with fears it could escalate into violence similar to that in the region of Doboj in central Bosnia yesterday (Monday). Two people are reported to have been killed and several others injured in the Doboj clash between Muslims and Serbs. Again Muslims were trying to return to a Serb held area of land. Eventually the Muslims were forced to return to Celic.
