Here is part of the story of Hugh Tracy, the man who studied and preserved many examples of traditional African Lamellaphones in the 1930s - 1950s. He also transformed the instrument into the modern kalimba. (i gloss over issues of cultural appropriation. i have always known the kalimba, and have also done my part in learning about the mbira and its sister instruments. but i am coming from a place of love and joy here… i acknowledge that every kalimba owes its existence to the mbira and other traditional instruments. and i experience joy in both the traditional and the non-traditional kalimbas. my job is not to judge here, but to educate… and to have fun as i play these instruments i love so much.) And I show part of the path of how the kalimba got to be so popular.
