The village sits on the base of Ama Yangri peak at 2600m and is among the largest and oldest cultural villages inhabited by the Hyolmo/Yolmo community, a culturally rich ethnic group in this (Langtang) conservation area. The village also holds great religious significance for Tibetan Buddhists who visit the nearby Ama Yangri Peak on pilgrimages. Ama Yangri peak at 3771m is considered to be the local deity and the protector of the valley. The trek to the peak takes approximately 6 hours up and back. There are no tea shops on the way, so you may want to pack food or snacks for the route and water. In addition to being a base camp for Ama Yangri Peak treks, Tarkeyghyang is also home to one the oldest Buddhist monastery in the region, Chiri Gumpa. Local legend is that the gumba was discovered by rats who dug through the hills for days to reach Tarkey Ghyang. This village is very important to Tibetan Buddhists as a pilgrimage site and there are a few lesser-known places of significance in the village and surrounding area as well. The locals here lead a simple life practising agriculture and animal husbandry. Some run lodges and homestays, providing food and accommodation to weary tourists and pilgrims.
