Igor Severyanin (1887-1941) was a Russian poet-futurist. In one of his most celebrated poems, he introduced himself to the readers with the following words: "I am Igor Severyanin, a genius!" He gained a cult following, especially in the provinces of Imperial Russia. Severyanin's poems treated such extraordinary themes as "ice cream of lilacs" and "pineapples in champagne", intending to overwhelm the bourgeois audience with a riot of colors and glamour associated by them with high society. In his verse, Severyanin admired automobiles and everything that could convey to his followers the notion of modernity. During one party, they declared Severyanin "the king of poets", although some respected critics professed their distaste for his work. After the Russian Revolution Severyanin was one of the first poets to leave Russia. Having settled in Estonia, he tried to return to Russia afterwards, but could not for various reasons. I selected seven poems for my cycle. Three songs can be heard in this video. The concert was presented by Musicians Club of New York. Video by Paula Argondizza. The first poem (Overture) is about all the beautiful things in our life: pineapples in in champagne, wing-soaring yachts, stylish dresses. The second song (It Took Place at the Sea) tells a story of a queen and a page falling in love. The queen was playing Chopin, and I used Chopin’s prelude as a piano accompaniment. The third poem (Chanson Russe) gave a title to the cycle. This song is about a village young maiden who misbehaves with a young fellow when her old husband goes on a trip. This performance is a U.S. premiere of these three songs. -Alexander Dmitriev 00:00 Chanson Russe (three songs from the cycle), poetry by Igor Severyanin; Chanson Russe (три песни из цикла), стихи Игоря Северянина 00:07 Overture (Pineapples in Champagne)/Увертюра (Ананасы в Шампанском) 01:33 It Took Place at the Sea/Это Было у Моря 03:46 Chanson Russe
