It is derived from the Philippine revolutionary song "Alerta, Revolucionarios" which ultimately stems from a march of the Guardia Civil in the Philippines, "Alerta, Voluntarios". This song is one of the ancestors of a known Philippine patriotic song and march today, "Alerta, Katipunan". This song speaks about the will and bravery of the Filipino revolutionaries to defend the sacred independence of the Philippines, all the while mentioning in the lyrics that the Americans are cheats, that they want to be friends with the Filipinos,, but in reality, they want to subjugate the Philippines to their colonial imperialist empire.
