Join the virtual public cloud migration discussion – discover how to migrate servers to the cloud without incurring two days of downtime per year. --- 00:00 Traditional on-site IT infrastructure (99.99% SLA) 01:00 What are regions & availability zones? 02:39 On-site 99.99% SLA vs virtual public cloud 99.5% SLA 04:03 Infrastructure split across multiple availability zones --- Still thinking about public cloud providers (e.g., AWS and Azure) in the same way you think about your on-premises infrastructure? You may need to reconsider your public cloud migration strategy before you make the switch. In this video, we cover the difference in system availability levels between on-site and virtual public cloud environments, and we explore how to maintain a 99.99% SLA when migrating servers to the virtual public cloud. What’s in store: ✔ ON-SITE AVAILABILITY … A traditional on-site IT infrastructure (e.g., two hypervisors underpinned by a SAN) delivers an availability level of around 99.99% (equivalent to 52-53 minutes of downtime per year). ✔ VIRTUAL PUBLIC CLOUD AVAILABILITY … A single EC2 instance within a single availability zone has a typical SLA of around 99.5% (equivalent to one day and nineteen hours of downtime per year). ✔ … WHAT’S THE SOLUTION? An optimised virtual public cloud architecture (i.e., leveraging multiple availability zones within a single region) can help to ensure the same cloud availability levels as clients would expect from an on-premises infrastructure. Why deploy over multiple availability zones? A typical on-site IT setup may include an IIS server and an SQL server. Building two separate EC2 instances (for the purpose of deploying IIS web server components across two availability zones) and novating the SQL into Amazon RDS (deployed in a multi-A-Z configuration as a separate layer), creates an optimised application across two zones (which avoids exposing mission critical assets to the 99.5% availability levels achieved via migrating to a single availability zone). In a fast paced and demanding public cloud market, these considerations are easy to overlook – and when a vendor or public cloud hosting service fails to educate clients, the result can be a drop in availability from 52-53 minutes of downtime per year to one day and nineteen hours of downtime per year.
