Episode 1287 Annie (Doris Speed) tries to withdraw from the Manchester Festival committee’s inaugural dinner, but refuses to explain herself to Alf (Bryan Mosley). Betty (Betty Driver) lets slip to him that Billy (Kenneth Farrington) is the cause, leading Alf to press Annie for the truth. She admits Billy has lost £200 gambling. Though she can cover the loss, she fears what the brewery would say and also the embarrassment it would cause to them as mayor and mayoress. Norma (Diana Davies) is upset as she suspects Ken (Bill Roache) of being interested in Faye-Marie (Jane Casson). Annie explodes at Billy over his lies and the missing money, and is heartbroken to learn he has helped himself to funds from the Rovers’ account in the past. She immediately dismisses him from his role as pub manager. Tom (David Holliday) tells Ena that he and Faye-Marie have an open marriage. Billy attempts to apologise, but Annie refuses to hear it and can only think about how Jack (Arthur Leslie) would have felt if he was still alive. Faye-Marie delivers her talk on America to Ken’s pupils. Annie wants to pull out of the Woburn Abbey trip but Alf urges Billy to persuade her to attend. Ray (Neville Buswell) tells Norma that Walter Biddulph (Bert Palmer) is selling his newsagents and café, and he is thinking of buying it. Billy admits to Annie that he is determined to make a fresh start. After persuading her to still go on the Woburn trip, he asks her to try and put his wrongdoings behind them.
