Many people ask why there are so many booms and explosions.. The meteor initially exploded into two large pieces, then continued to break up into smaller pieces, resulting in a sequence of explosions as the meteor continued downrange. Also - the meteor was traveling at 40,000+ MPH, producing a very strong shockwave (sonic boom) along its entire path. Since sound only travels at 750 MPH (a little faster at high altitude), it took different amounts of time for the sonic booms to travel from all parts of the path to any given point on the ground, resulting in a series of sonic booms that went on for a long time, just like thunder rolls on for long after a lightning bolt.
