It is important to know which cabinet style you are working with as the cabinet style will determine everything from hinge style to the amount of Laminate you will need to use when refacing. There are two common types of cabinets in the industry. The American style cabinet, commonly referred to as “Face Frame”, will usually have recessed tops and bottoms, doors that do not completely cover the box, and doors that are attached to a standard two-inch frame. Euro style cabinets, also known as “Frameless”, have flat sides, tops, and bottoms. The doors will attach to the interior side wall of the cabinet and completely cover the cabinet face. Once you have identified the type of cabinet you are refacing, you will be able to calculate the amount of laminate, type of hinge, and the size tolerance of the doors. Euro cabinets will almost always need to be laminated on the bottoms of upper cabinets. Face Frame cabinets, will not be laminated on the bottom unless bottoms are flat. Additionally, you will have to pad out the sides with one eighth to one quarter inch plywood before refacing.
