In the capitalist society, there exists a pervasive imposition of rules dictating the definition of success. The prevalent metric for evaluating success has increasingly revolved around tangible outcomes, quantifiable measures such as followers, monetary wealth, and public notoriety; things that not always occur only consequently to individual effort but also out of someone’s environment or perhaps someone’s education or maybe just luck. This paradigm is particularly observable among art scholars (and students in general), young entrepreneurs (start uppers and early-stage professionals), and aspiring artists who, under societal pressure, gauge their accomplishments by these externally visible markers. Fool Also is a Film/Project that started with the purpose of casting a light onto Bryan Illsley’s life and work. An artist, a British historical figure that “survived” his whole carrier in the shadow, barely making it to the end of the month. The real intent of this film is to analyze the real meaning of success in a world, the one we are living now, in which everyone needs to hit specific algorithms or say/make specific things to be, or feel, “successful” neglecting the true meaning of art and, sometimes, forced to compromise their original intents. Bryan has been productive, far from recognition, for 5 decades never undermining his honesty and he did so against all the possible odds, so this film “his life” wants to be a message to those who struggle to accomplish their goals in life, it’s a message from a father figure towards his hypothetical “children” to: keep battling on.
