Forward Times Associate Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Chelsea Lenora Small and CEO and Publisher Karen Carter Richards welcomed the CW39 Houston team inside the historic Forward Times building for a special segment of Honoring Black History. During the visit, H-Town Morning News reporter Vanessa Pacheco and the CW39 crew walked the halls of the building that has stood on Almeda Road since 1961, explored the press room, and flipped through archives that date all the way back to Forward Times’ very first edition on January 30, 1960. In the conversation, Karen and Chelsea share the story behind Forward Times and the legacy that continues today. The mother-daughter duo represent the second and third generations of leadership of the publication founded by Julius P. Carter. Carter, Karen’s father and Chelsea’s grandfather, started Forward Times in his garage with a vision of creating a positive Negro newspaper that would highlight the achievements, voices, and stories of the Black community. What began as a small community publication has grown into one of the largest independently owned Black newspapers in the country. For 66 years, Forward Times has never missed a single week of print, continuing its mission of documenting history, informing the community, and preserving the stories that shape Houston and beyond.
