At 22,621 feet beneath the Philippine Sea, the USS Samuel B. Roberts rests as the deepest known shipwreck on Earth—nearly twice as deep as the Titanic. On October 25, 1944, this tiny destroyer escort charged directly at the Japanese battleship Yamato and its entire battle fleet. Outgunned and outnumbered, Captain Robert Copeland ordered an attack that defied every rule of naval warfare. For 85 minutes, the Sammy B. fought like a battleship, launching torpedoes that crippled the Japanese cruiser Chōkai. Of the 224 men aboard, 89 never came home. For 78 years, the Samuel B. Roberts lay hidden in the crushing darkness of the hadal zone. In June 2022, explorer Victor Vescovo finally reached her using the Limiting Factor submersible, discovering the wreck in pristine condition. This is the story of courage, sacrifice, and the technology that honored their memory. TAGS: USS Samuel B.
