On this trip, we continue from our previous journey. Catch up here: • Rural Mountain Roads Pt. 1 - Scenic Drive ... Leaving Baokang County, we turn onto Highway 241 and drive west into the deep, dramatic gorges of the Jingshan Mountains. The limestone cliffs rise sharply on both sides like giant vertical screens, with the valley floor barely one-fifth the depth of the gorge, forming a narrow, V-shaped deep-cut river valley. The most breathtaking part of this route is the elevated bridges crossing the mountains. As vehicles reach the heart of the gorge, spectacular bridges stretch across the valley like massive dragons, their piers plunging from the valley floor into the clouds, and the bridge deck soaring hundreds of meters above the ground, turning an otherwise impassable chasm into a smooth route. These bridges are not only part of National Highway G346, but also an engineering marvel of China’s mountainous road construction—built in a karst landscape, they overcome fragile geology, strong gorge winds, and extremely limited construction space. The vertical drop between the bridges and the valley floor often exceeds a hundred meters, creating a striking “cars in the valley, bridges in the sky” spectacle that showcases the sheer scale of Chinese infrastructure. The trip ends in Maqiao Town. Though this stretch is relatively short, it encapsulates both the most rugged and stunning geological features of the Jingshan Mountains and the engineering feats of China’s highway construction. We hope you enjoy this journey!
