Adam Kok was a cook, freed slave and founding leader of the newly formed Griqua people. Adam Kok I: Griqua chief Born in 1710, Adam Kok became leader of a new people, the Griquas who were born of inter-racial marriages in South Africa's Cape between the Dutch, Khoikhoi, British, San, Xhosa, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Mozambique over hundreds of years of trade, slavery and colonialism. The mixed race people, known as Basters, later Griquas, increasingly squeezed out from their land, moved to the frontiers. In the 1750s they were led by Adam Kok, a freed slave, who started work as a cook (hence "Kok") and managed to obtain burgher rights and a farm near the present Piketberg. Adam Kok married Donna, the daughter of the chief of a Khoikhoi clan, the Chariguriqua, attracted a mixed following of Basters, Khoikhoi and escaped slaves as he moved to Little Namaqualand. He established a system of government with leaders, kaptyns and magistrates drawn from the leading families. To escape British rule, the Boers trekked inland, but this caused further tension as the new republics encroached on Griqua land. Adam Kok died in 1795 at Pella, but his name lives on in Kokstad. His son Cornelius, and grandson Adam Kok II continued the survival of the Griqua people.
