Right next to the Colosseum lies a surprisingly overlooked ruin — the Ludus Magnus, Rome’s largest known gladiatorial training school. But how do archaeologists actually know this is the Ludus Magnus when there’s no inscription identifying it? In this Mini Gem video, we look at the archaeological evidence behind the identification: the distinctive arena-and-barracks floor plan, its proximity to the Colosseum, the fragments of the ancient marble map of Rome (the Forma Urbis), matching architectural proportions, and even scale comparisons that help confirm the site. This shorter experimental format focuses on one clear historical insight, how archaeologists identify ancient structures and how modern Rome literally sits on top of the ancient city beneath it.
