The next year I was asked to do this, for the magazine and it was great fun but I was asked to do a mystery quilt and I don't do mysteries, I like clarity, I like to know what I’m doing. The best thing about this is all the stuff I've seen that was made from this but isn't this! So many people have taken the ideas and gone “Hey this is lovely, I’ll do this, I’ll do it in yellow, I’ll do it long and thin, I’ll make a tiny, tiny one” and it's been great fun and I think in lots of ways it's freed people up. Modern group as part of Guild has been really, really important to me, because I think we need to outreach and I think this outreaches as well and when we'd done this and it had been in the magazine, that was just within the Guild so I asked for permission to publish the pattern, I sold a lot of patterns and we made a whole exhibit at Quilt Fest which was loads and loads and loads and loads of things derived from this, in lots of different ways, some completely different. I made an indigo one and a black, white and pink one and they're totally unalike my colleague made one in green with little bits of magenta called “Magenta Pop” and hers is very formal, everything is a four inch block, mine is lots of different sizes of blocks as you can see, the great thing about Improv quilting is you can't get it wrong, you cannot fail, it doesn't need nice seam allowances, you don't have to do anything a particular way and if it looks like your handwriting that's much better than it looks like mine, because I have the worst handwriting in the world, but I do like to piece fabrics. Thanks. The Modern Quilt Group is one of five varied special interest groups available for Guild members to join, visit our website at www.quiltersguild.org.uk to find out more.
