The Bristol to Exeter line was built Between 1841 and 1844 and crossed a low area of land near Exeter. This area is where the rivers Creedy and Exe meet at Cowley Bridge and was always notorious for flooding in winter. This programme will discuss the changes that have been made to the rivers at Cowley, and the measures put in place since the disastrous Exeter City floods of December 1960 and subsequent flood events. Richard Watts, was the BR Western Region Resident Engineer on site during work carried out in the mid-1960s to reduce the effect of the seasonal rise in water levels. Although this project was essentially a bridge replacement scheme the river’s course was the key driver to the direction of this project.
