(11 Aug 2000) English/Nat TITLE: Everybody Loves Raymond LOCATION: Anguillara, Italy DATE:Recent The cast and crew of US hit sitcom EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND have come to Italy to film the first two opening episodes of next season's show. The scenes for the award-winning CBS comedy were shot in the picturesque town of Anguillara, by Lake Bracciano just outside Rome. Ray Barone seemingly has it all: a wonderful wife, a beautiful family, a great job, a nice house on Long Island. There's only one problem. His obnoxious parents (who live across the street) and his jealous brother are always getting in the way. Marie Barone, Raymond's meddling, control-freak mother (played by DORIS ROBERTS) has saved up for 45 years to return to her roots in Italy. And since she is paying for the whole clan to go, everybody had better do as she says! Debra, Ray's wife, (PATRICIA HEATON) was suprised that even she was invited on Marie's dime. The top ten Emmy-nominated sitcom doesn't hold any big suprises for next season's viewing audience except that Robert (Ray's brother, played by BRAD GARRETT) begins to enjoy the bachelor's life a little bit more. According to RAY ROMANO, the leading actor/comedian/co-writer of the sitcom, the family comedy isn't based as much on a progressive plot, but is written in an episodic, "vignette" style. It's being directed in Italy by GARY HALVORSON. Even with Ray's best intentions, things easily go wrong. He finds himself sick for the whole vacation, and behaves like a wet blanket. On a biking excursion with his wife Debra, she injures her arm and has it in a sling for the rest of the trip. Normally filmed in front of a live audience with four cameras in a Los Angeles studio, the cast had to adapt to a new working style. Outdoor locations, temperatures up to 40 degrees Celcius (95 farenheit),long shooting hours and the need to shoot and re-shoot scenes with just one camera proved tiring. On set, however, no one looked any worse for wear. Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton said they were glad that they didn't have to work as hard in Los Angeles! But then that may just be down to the beautiful Italian surroundings.
