West Point Organist Craig Williams plays his transcription for organ of Franz Biebl's "Angelus Domini (Ave Maria)" written for double men's chorus - a four-part chorus balanced against a trio chorus. The opening chant of the Angelus prayer, sung by the baritones, is from the Gospel of Luke: "The Angel of the Lord announced to Mary and she conceived by the Holy Spirit." This is followed by the Ave Maria refrain: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." The second chant, sung by first tenors, is: "Mary said: Behold the handmaiden of the Lord. Do to me according to thy word." After the second refrain, the third chant - also sung by first tenors - is from the Gospel of John: "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us." The last refrain completes the Ave Maria with the Sancta: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen." This organ transcription balances a combination of 8' foundation stops in manual and pedal for the four-part chorus balanced against another set of 8' foundation stops in other divisions for the trio. The size of the West Point organ allows for the first verse and refrain to be set on two opposing registrations and then the second verse and refrain to be set on opposing divisions in an entirely different side of the organ. The third verse then has both combinations of the first two respective verses combined, intensifying the registration even further for the Sancta. All trio parts are produced by sounds coupled to the second manual while the full chorus sounds are produced on the first manual and pedal. The original voicing of the parts is kept as closely as possible, sometimes making it necessary for the respective treble and bass ranges of the two manuals to be doubled with each hand and sometimes doubling the pedal. The result is to create the same rich harmonic palette heard in Biebl's original version for men's choirs. #pipeorgan #avemaria #transcription #westpoint
