Kihnu is the seventh largest island in Estonia in Gulf of Riga, it is 7 km long and 3,3 km large. It is an ancient island of seafarers and fishermen. The cultural heritage of Kihnu – the clothing, language music and handcrafts are part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. In this vlog you can see old, traditional Kihnu houses and beautiful nature. In middle of the island is rubble stone church built is 1784 as a Lutheran church, after conversion movement in 1840 it was reconstructed as an Orthodox church. The Kihnu lighthouse located on the southern peak of the island was assembled in 1864. The height of the lighthouse is 31m above sea level. The purpose of the lighthouse is to guide ships to their home port on stormy sea. The island is home to a close-knit community of about 700 inhabitants, who value old traditions, the language and songs of Kihnu. Small island folks have maintained their identity and traditional way of life. People of Kihnu have used and are still using family marks. As the men of Kihnu have been frequently away to sea, women have run everyday life on the island and became the guardians of the island's cultural heritage, which includes handicrafts, dances, games and music. Kihnu is famous for its handicrafts and distinctive traditional clothing, which is still commonly worn today. It includes striped skirts (kört), and patterned knit men's sweaters (troi), and knit mittens.
