In this video we discuss the history, rise, demise and possible revival of the tramways of Brisbane. A defence of Clem Jones is in order. Throughout this video Jones is framed as the villain of this whole ordeal lobbying hard to take trams off the streets in favour of cars despite protests from many residents. It is worth noting however, that throughout his 14-year tenure he helped turn Brisbane from a ‘big country town’ to a city on the world stage. Jones rapidly improved the infrastructure around the city directly or indirectly by routing sewerage to huge parts of the city at a time when most people still used outhouses, paving over many streets at a time when dirt roads were common, constructing many parks including the botanical gardens and securing the bid for the 1982 Commonwealth Games. The decision to close down the tram network, a horrible idea in hindsight, was a way to ‘modernise’ the city as many cities around the world had done the same before Brisbane. The decisions that Jones took undoubtedly improved Brisbane as a whole, but the removal of the trams was by far his worst decision. Thank you to all of our donors for allowing videos like this to be possible and to the staff of the Brisbane Tramway Museum for the help they provided in making this video especially Max, you’re a legend mate.
