Bhakthan = A devotee; Valsalan= The beloved one Bhakthavalsalan = "The beloved devotee or disciple" or, "The One who delights in His devotees" Bhakthavalsalan (1949 - 2023) led a revolution in Malayalam Christian devotional music for 52 years. There was a time when Kerala's Christians were reluctant to use even simple musical instruments in their churches or in gospel campaigns. Bhakthavalsalan ushered in a new era of gospel music. He wrote beautiful songs based on his experience with Christ. He formed Christian bands, the most famous of which was Campus Crusade's Heartbeats. He fostered a new generation of singers and musicians. He's known as the Granddaddy of modern Malayalam Gospel music. Part 1 of his last interview with Exodus deals with his early years. In the ʼ60s, Bhaktan was attracted to movie songs that were available via radio broadcasts from AIR and Radio Ceylon. The Church or its songs offered nothing to stimulate his talent. He couldn't even afford to buy a simple Harmonium. Poverty led him to sing and act in secular drama and musicals. He had to eke out a living. His parents were preachers. While they preached in churches, their only son - born 18 years after their wedding - sang in Hindu temple festivals. His parents would shed tears for him daily, interceding for their son. One evening, his father invited him to sing at a Church where he was supposed to preach the Gospel. Bhaktan promised he'd come. But he had already committed himself to act in a drama. His father missed him at the Church. Later that evening, a member of that Church heard Bhaktan's deep voice echoing across the village. "Isn't that your son's voice? He's singing at a temple festival," he said. The father's heart was broken. That night, the parents interceded for Bhaktan. When Bhaktan returned, he heard his father's prayers on his behalf. He went to the back of the house to sneak in through another door. There, he heard his mother's prayers for him. After his supper, he tried to sleep; but he couldn't. He experienced a heaviness in his chest and he thought he was going to die. He cried out in fear. His father embraced him. That's when he saw a vision of Jesus. The large, bright figure stood before him with extended arms. "You haven't sung for me yet," Jesus said. Bhaktan was heartbroken. He fell down and cried. Thus, he met with Christ as a result of his parents' prayers. He decided to sing for Jesus and for no one else. He wrote a song about his decision to sing for Jesus. "I refuse to sing anymore— except your praises, O holy One. Till my last breath, I will sing for you alone." Part 2 of the interview will be released on June 25, 2023.
