...may the shadow of the moon by Jack Kloecker Commissioned and Performed by Korry Friend recorded - 03/10/18 - (headphones recommended) University of Nebraska - Lincoln Lincoln, NE https://korryfriend.wordpress.com Gear: Majestic 6.5 x 14 Walnut Prophonic Snare Drum Mapex Marching Snare Drum Stand ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Program Notes: "The title ...may the shadow of the moon derives directly from an ABC News coverage of the North American eclipse in February of 1979, in which anchor Frank Reynolds says "Not until Aug. 21, 2017, will another eclipse be visible from North America. That's 38 years from now. May the shadow of the moon fall on a world at peace.” As August 21st, 2017 approached this clip resurfaced on the internet and started to resonate with me, especially on the day of the eclipse. As the moon completely overtook the sun that day I experienced a personal moment of peace. The altered color-scheme of the landscape, birds chirping out of turn, the city lights illuminating a previously sun-lit horizon. All of these events lead to somewhat of a sensory overload. I’ve included a picture I took of the scene below. ...may the shadow of the moon was written based upon my experience that day as it related to Frank Reynolds’ quote. In the audio track, I wanted to combine two contrasting styles of electronic music together; ambient electronic music inspired by artists such as Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds, and drum and bass music inspired by artists such as Aphex Twin and B-Complex. By combining these two styles, I attempted to mimic two celestial bodies ‘merging’ during the eclipse. The snare drum part acts as a connecting point between the two styles of music. I strived to merge the snare drum into the track as a texture at parts, but also wanted to showcase rudimental elements as well. ...may the shadow of the moon was commissioned by a consortium of percussionists in the fall of 2017 including Korry Friend (organizer), Lucas Allen, Ben Haiman, Oliver Molina, Brandon West, and Alex Woodside."
