In this talk, I reflect on sleep, aging, COPD, and the surprisingly slippery line between healthy rest and quiet retreat. I used to pride myself on getting by with very little sleep. Now, like many older folks, I find myself napping more, waking up often, and wondering how much rest I actually need. Then I stumbled across the old Scottish phrase Hurkle-Durkle—the habit of lingering in bed or napping longer than necessary. It made me ask: when I reach for more sleep, am I truly resting… or avoiding the day? In this video, I explore how Hurkle-Durkle can disguise itself as self-care, how aging makes everything slower and harder, and how pushing myself to start—just start—almost always gives me more energy than another hour under the covers. And I share a simple idea: maybe we extend our lives not just with diet and exercise, but by reclaiming the good hours within each day. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re recharging or retreating, or if you’re simply curious how a 90-year-old with COPD thinks about naps, chores, and motivation, you may find a bit of yourself here.
