Manila Korean Times Kopino Appeal 2013/2014 KOPINO is the term Bum Sik Son, founder of Kopino Children Association, Inc., uses to refer to children born between a Korean father and a Filipino mother. The KO in KOPINO stands for KOREAN and PINO stands for FILIPINO. KOPINO has become a common term use to refer to Filipinos who have physically and/or culturally recognizable Korean ancestry. Since 1990, Filipinos began to see a steady and continuous influx of South Koreans visiting the Philippines as tourists, students and businessmen. These Koreans viewed the Philippines as a less expensive and less stressful place to live... The Korean man leaves the woman behind, dejected and unable to care for her own children. Sometimes, even her own family rejects her too, because she was unable to support them... The Kopinos is an underprivileged part of society. They face a life of uncertainty, even more than typical impoverished Filipino family.
