Emad Ebbini, Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering talks about how millions of people undergo surgery every day and countless lives are improved in the process. But for some patients, conventional surgery may not be an option (e.g., some late-stage liver cancers). Other options, such as radiation and chemotherapy, have their own risks and limitations. Ebbini is working to change all that with the dual-mode ultrasound array (DMUA). DMUAs are capable of focusing ultrasound energy within deep tissue volumes (e.g. cancer tumors) to cause selective destruction, while sparing the normal intervening tissue. At the same time, they can image the state of the tissue with high precision in space and time. The noninvasive device, which has been compared to a lightsaber or a magic wand, involves no blood, no drugs and no ionizing radiation. It can also be used to improve the efficacy of drugs and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy. This lecture was originally given at the 50-Year/Golden Medallion Society Reunion on May 12, 2017.
