Desert Star instruments such as the SonarPoint underwater acoustic recorder and the ARC-1 acoustic release are sealed with a piston or side-seal O-ring. O-ring seals are inherently very reliable. But, that reliability depends on proper use and a small mistake can result in flooding. This tutorial explains how this type of O-ring seal works, and what can make it fail. It concludes with an example of an apparent failure of a well designed and assembled seal, which should never happen. And so of course, this flooding turned out to be something else entirely.
