Family Sues After Son’s Suicide

The family of a Naperville North Student who committed suicide after a disciplinary discussion has filed a lawsuit against District 203 and the Naperville Police Department. 16-year-old Corey Walgren was an avid hockey player and beloved son and brother. But as his parents shared in an exclusive interview with the Naperville Sun, Corey ended his life on January 11, after two Naperville North Deans and a Naperville Police Officer questioned him at school about possible pornographic images on his phone. Corey’s parents say they were not present or notified prior to the questioning, which is in part why they are now suing the District, the Police Department, and the three individuals involved for over $5 million. The Walgren family claims the questioning violated the law, and caused “extreme and excessive psychological distress and fear,” as the officials falsely threatened Corey with claims that he could be put on a registered sex offender list for possession of child pornography. After the interrogation, they left Corey alone, which is when he left the building and walked to a downtown parking garage; climbing to the top and falling to his death. District 203 cannot comment on the lawsuit, but did release a statement, which reads: “This incident has been very difficult for those involved and we continue to be incredibly saddened by Corey’s death. Our hearts go out to Corey’s family and friends and to all the students and members of the Naperville community. We continue to offer grief counseling to our students but as this is now a matter of litigation we are not able to comment further.” Though the city of Naperville was not named in the lawsuit, their attorney issued a statement reading, “This has been a tragic event for everyone involved and our community. Given that this matter involves minors, we ask the community to show patience and respect throughout the legal process. We are confident the school resource officer followed proper policies and procedures. The City and Police Department remain committed to supporting and serving the students and families of our community.” Naperville News 17’s Kim Pirc reports.
