One of the greatest threats to our planet is marine debris, as it impacts our human health, tourism economy, water quality, and wildlife. Marine debris can enter into our waterways when heavy rainfall forces “misplaced” trash down neighborhood storm drains and then flushes it through outfall pipes emptying into our surrounding waterbodies. The Watergoat device discussed in this video creates a barrier to trap floating debris before entering further into the lake system, so staff and volunteers can scoop it out for proper disposal. With the help of our dedicated community volunteers, we’ve removed over 1,400 lbs. of debris in the last two years from this Watergoat! This debris was mostly composed of single-use plastics, smoking devices, food wrappers, and yard waste like mulch. Each one of us can make a difference and minimize the effects of stormwater pollution by reducing our waste, choosing reusable items, cleaning up after our pets, maintaining our vehicles, and properly disposing of yard waste.
