As the first non-numbered title in the series, Rune Factory Frontier presents as a sequel story to and features returning cast members from the original Rune Factory for the Nintendo DS in 2006. Rune Factory is a series of fantasy adventure role-playing video games that feature elements of farming, dungeons, romance, crafting, and more. In "Rune Factory Frontier,” the protagonist sets off in search of a girl named Mist who once saved his life after she suddenly disappears from their hometown, Kardia. After lodging for the night in the soothing, nature-braided town of Trampoli, he coincidentally reconnects with Mist; however, she declines to return home because a voice in her dreams has called her to Trampoli for help. Without much say in the matter, the protagonist then finds himself starting a new life in Trampoli, and as Mist's neighbor once again. Upon exploring the mysterious Whale Island that swims happily in the sky above the town, the protagonist meets a nocturnal maiden named Iris, who lives by her lonesome on the whale's fin. One day, the rune cluster that suspends Whale Island in the sky begins diminishing drastically, putting in danger those below should the island falter and sink.
