Democracy at Work: Engaged Constituents Urge their Representatives to Support Ukraine and Stand Up for Freedom – Five Minutes a Day Keeps Putin at Bay Media Contact: If you find more somewhere, or would like to feature a story about this effort, please contact us via email: [email protected] or by phone at (202) 794-5060 December 8, 2014 Washington, DC – A final phase of the four week project is underway in Washington, DC and around the country to urge U.S. House Representatives to support H.R. 5782, a new bill that would provide significant financial assistance to support freedom and human rights in Ukraine and reinforce sanctions on Russia. H.R. 5782, introduced by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH-9) on December 2 would designate Ukraine as a major non-NATO ally, help reduce Ukraine’s dependence on Russian energy sources, and provide assistance to Ukraine’s refugees and military. H.R. 5782 is a copy of S. 2828, introduced by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) in September 2014. Both bills have received bipartisan support. As of December 7th the H.R. 5782 has 17 co-sponsors split equally between Democrats and Republicans. Hundreds of volunteers from around the country have been visiting their elected officials in Washington, DC and ringing their congressional offices, urging them to co-sponsor H.R. 5782. Through sanctions and defensive military aid, the law would support Ukraine by deterring further Russian intervention in Ukraine. Americans and Ukrainians are united in their concern of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine resulting in destabilization of Europe and threatening the post WWII foundation of peace. Volunteers are appealing to freedom-loving citizens to spend “Five minutes a day keeps Putin at bay!” over the next four days to urge their elected officials to support Ukraine.
