"The Red Room(or just Red Room)" is a urban legend about a red pop-up that shows itself when browsing the internet. When the victim tries to close the pop-up, another would take its place over and over until the full sentence is shown "Do you like the red room?". After the sentence is composed, the victim's computer screen will turn red and a list of names will appear(list of previous victims), with the most recent victim's name at the bottom. It's unknown what happens after that but some say he/she commits suicide by cutting the carotid artery, "painting" the room red with their own blood. While the origin is unknown, the legend is said to have formed back when the internet increased in popularity(90s, early 2000s). Since the internet was new and alien; conspired stories, rumors, and ghastly tales of a brainwashing pop-up would've been relevant at the time. Worms, viruses, hackers, and the like make the internet a scary story all on its own. On the internet, we take precautions when encountering any type of pop-up/virus because it may do harm to our computers. Could a virus harm more than just computers? Can a online worm infect you into committing suicide? Years ago, someone created an interactive flash animation about this urban legend and hosted it on Yahoo Geocities/JP(http://goo.gl/yqxJ9F). This Flash animation gained notoriety when it was discovered to be a favorite of a Japanese schoolgirl who committed the "Sasebo Slashing". The "Sasebo Slashing" was a murder that took place on June 1, 2004. In Sasebo, Japan, Okubo Elementary School student Satomi Mitarai's throat and arms were slit with a utility knife by 11-year-old classmate, "Nevada-tan". Since this urban legend lacks a source, many assume the point of origin is the Geocities web page. Did the animator make it all up, or has this urban legend existed years before? And if the Geocities page hosted the "real killer pop-up", would it make sense that a video telling the tale accompany it? I'd say the pop-up hosted there is a fan-made replica for pranking. Nonetheless, there's more to this urban legend than just a harmless joke... Communism: The first theory is that the pop-up is a brainwashing tool, used by communists. Abduction: Speaking of brainwashing... Some say North Korea created the pop-up to secretly brainwash people online as one method of their nefarious plans. During the years 1977 to 1983, North Korean government admitted to abducting random people to aid and become spies(primarily people fluent in Japanese). More than 100 people are said to have been abducted, only 5 were released. Code Red: "Code Red" was a computer worm that attacked computers running Microsoft's IIS web server on July 15, 2001. The infected websites were defaced by the worm, showing the following message: "HELLO! Welcome to worm! Hacked By Chinese!" ILOVEYOU: Another theory is that the "Red Room" is a disguised computer worm, much like the infamous "Love Letter Bug". The "Love Letter Bug(aka ILOVEYOU)" was a computer worm that attacked tens of millions of Windows personal computers on and after 6 May 2000. The worm started spreading as an email message with the subject line "ILOVEYOU". Deep Web: Websites named "Red Rooms" are supposedly hosted on the deep web. Such websites are said to be set in a video-chat format, showcasing live human torture. The types of torture are suggested by the highest bidders. With everything put on the table, this could simply be a early example of creepypasta, intended to scare new internet users. Scary stories on the internet is just something that's apart of internet culture. It's easy to trick internet users into believing anything. Why? Because the dark side of the internet exists. How? Because the internet is, in a sense, a living entity that we created. And much like this legend, it will find you if you obsess over it. So take this legend with a grain of salt. **Please vote for one of our admins. She is competing for Face of Horror! https://faceofhorror.org/2022/hannah-...
