What is Disability Pride Month?!

Did you know July is Disability Pride Month? No, it’s not the same as LGBTQ+ Pride—though they fall one after the other, Disability Pride Month is its own celebration, and it’s incredibly important. It began in the US in July 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed, and it has since become a global movement. It's a celebration and an act of protest—especially vital this year as disabled people around the world face ongoing cuts to support. The 3 main goals of Disability Pride Month are: -To change the way people think about and define disability -To help people unlearn the internalised ableism felt within the disabled community -And to promote the belief that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity It’s not about pretending disability is easy. It’s about saying: even though it’s hard, we’re still here. We’re thriving. We’re not going anywhere. But we do need allies to fight alongside us—so we can achieve true respect and equity.
