Raed Melki is a Melbourne-based rapper, known for his boundary-pushing avant-rap. Although he’s been active on the rap scene for nearly 20 years, it wasn’t until 2011 that he became a minor viral sensation, after amassing a quarter of a million views on his iconic music video for “I No She Wants Me Back”. Since then, he has somehow managed to continuously push the envelope, and blossom as a sonic experimenter with each subsequent release. The artistic progression of RAED, in my eyes, culminated with the release of his magnum opus, Volcano the Lava. This album was originally released in 2017, but for reasons unknown to the public, it recently disappeared from all streaming services. After many weeks of desperate searching, a very kind man messaged me a link to a Google Drive file, containing every song on this album. I was ecstatic. After re-listening to Volcano the Lava once more, and shortly again thereafter, my love for this album grew to an unprecedented extent, and I decided that it would be a crime not to make this available to the general public. It is impossible not to fall in love with Volcano the Lava. From the hypnotic, repeated mantra of “goosebumps on that, whose bumps on that, who wants some of that, who’s the one who’s number one on that?” found on the funky opening track “Mandellah Swell Fellah”, to the frightening yet catchy track “Hashishie”, which depicts a mental breakdown. RAED somehow manages to shock the listener and explore uncharted territory with just about every song on this 1hr40min album. That, in and of itself, is absolutely unbelievable. If this is your first time being exposed to RAED, I implore you to consume this album in the same way one would consume a fine wine. Try to comprehend how every detail, no matter how oppressive and off-kilter, meshes perfectly as a whole, to create an atmosphere of lunacy and disorder. Lay in a dark room, wear your most high-quality pair of headphones, and allow yourself to be sucked into the bloodstream of Volcano the Lava. The tracklist/time stamps can be found in the comment section below, enjoy the ride.
