What would life be like if your sense of smell suddenly disappeared? In this talk, Duncan Boak — founder of the UK charity Fifth Sense — explains why smell and taste are far more important than most people realize. From enjoying food and wine to recognizing loved ones and connecting with the world around us, smell plays a powerful role in everyday life. Yet millions of people live with smell and taste disorders that are often misunderstood or overlooked. Duncan shares the moment his life changed. At just 22 years old, a head injury caused him to lose his sense of smell completely. What started as a confusing realization during a simple meal became a lifelong mission to raise awareness and support people living with smell and taste loss. This powerful story highlights: • Why smell and taste matter more than we think • How smell connects us to food, memories, and relationships • What it’s like to suddenly lose the sense of smell • Why smell disorders deserve more research and awareness Smell and taste disorders affect millions worldwide, yet many people don’t realize how deeply these senses shape our daily lives.
