These three phases are (1) free flow, (2) synchronized flow, and (3) wide moving jam. In free flow, vehicles are able to move as they wish. Free flow can lead to synchronized flow when more vehicles are present—vehicles do not move as quickly, and they tend to synchronize to roughly the same speed. Synchronized flow can morph into a wide moving jam, which moves at a much slower rate with a greater traffic density. Boris Kerner is a journey through all three phases and back again.
