In season 1 episode 3 of "Discovering Strength in the Stories of Others: Conversations with Parents of Children with Intestinal Malrotation," pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Bram Raphael provides an explanation to 2 mothers (Kaley & Amy) of what causes intestinal malrotation and volvulus, a rare and potentially dangerous congenital anomaly leading to symptoms in approximately 1 in 6000 live births. During the first trimester of fetal development, as part of a sequence of intestinal growth, the small intestine abnormally rotates in the wrong direction. The position (malrotation) can lead to severe gastrointestinal problems.
