We hosted our second Collective Thread workshop, exploring innovative solutions for more sustainable football kit production, this time supported by the Premier League. In partnership with the University of Greenwich, we welcomed students from across London to the UoG campus and challenged them to rethink how kit upcycling and repurposing could be better integrated into the commercial football ecosystem. With around 100,000 tonnes of sportswear sent to landfill every year, the equivalent of 951 football shirts a minute, there is a clear need to rethink how kits are produced, sold and reused. From transferable patches to kits being repurposed into stadium seat covers, the ideas were ambitious, creative and fan-focused, developed with support from our brilliant presenters on the day, Liv McTigue and Ally Flan. Thank you to our panel of judges for their insight and time: Julie Brown, Chief People Officer at Crystal Palace Football Club Dana Tohme, Inclusion and Wellbeing Officer at Crystal Palace Football Club Joanna Czutkowna, CEO at 5THREAD Katie Cross, CEO and Founder at Pledgeball We’re excited to see where these ideas go next.
