Did Francis Bacon write Shakespeare? In this video, we explore Old Gorhambury in St Albans, the 16th-century Elizabethan estate associated with Sir Francis Bacon. Built in the 1560s from flint and brick, Old Gorhambury once featured a Tudor courtyard layout, chapel, grand hall and a gallery reportedly prepared for Queen Elizabeth I. Today, the ruins remain standing within Gorhambury Estate in Hertfordshire, close to the Roman city of Verulamium. Francis Bacon (1561–1626) was a philosopher and Lord Chancellor under King James I, often credited with shaping early modern scientific thought. For over a century, some have proposed the Baconian theory…suggesting he may have written the works attributed to William Shakespeare. Most scholars reject this claim, yet the debate continues to fascinate historians. Filmed in Hertfordshire, England.
