(23 Sep 2017) Residents of Halabja expressed their views on the forthcoming independence referendum on Kurdish independence from Iraq, many saying they would like to see it go ahead. The wounds of war run deep in this town on the Iranian border, where Saddam Hussein's forces launched a chemical attack in 1988, killing up to five thousand men, women and children. At the time the town opposed Saddam and was allegedly providing a safe haven for Iranian troops. The attack was part of a military campaign against Iraqi Kurds code-named Operation Anfal during the 1980-88 Iraq-Iran war, which killed between 50,000 and 100,000 people. Support for secession is expected to be high as many people draw a direct connection between the suffering of the past and their hopes for independence, although some said it would be better if their everyday economic concerns were addressed first.
