I’m not a fan of the term “little T” trauma. It implies that the impact of such experiences is inconsequential (spoiler alert: it isn’t). The scientific and clinical practice community are redefining what a traumatic experience and adversity really are, and it is not what most people think. For example, we now know that a mom being slightly mis-attuned, meaning she is unable to properly ‘tune-in’ to her infant’s cues for care and attention, is experienced by the baby’s developing system AS THE SAME kind of life threat and stress as being physically abused. A harsh reality to accept, but it is true. In this video, I use fibromyalgia as a case study to prove that you don’t need to have experienced a big blow-up event (like a massive car accident, torturous abuse, war, etc.) to be traumatized. And that early preverbal trauma is often the culprit behind these sorts of chronic troubles later in life. If you’re wondering whether this nervous system healing work applies to you since you have no memories of any BIG traumas in your life, have a watch.
