Tennis elbow is usually experienced as a pain in the forearm right near the outer part of the elbow. There are many tennis elbow symptoms, but almost all of them involve tenderness in the forearm. How most people treat tennis elbow is a little different than the way, we should treat it. Currently most physical therapist will be hugely into a combination of manual therapy, lots of stretching, a little exercise, and some electric stimulation. This often times is ineffective because we should primarily be doing the opposite. We should be doing a ton of strengthening, a descent amount of manual therapy, and almost NO stretching. Before we jump to the conclusion that our tennis elbow is due to weak muscles around the elbow we want to check the rest of our kinetic chain. Just because we have pain in our forearm does not immediately mean that the muscles in the forearms aren't strong enough to resist the force that's coming through them. The problem could stem from a postural deviation higher up. For example shoulder protraction. If you slouch and your arms are always rotated inwards you will stretch the forearm extensors, and continue stretching them until you fix the shoulder protraction. I already made a video of how to fix shoulder protraction that you can check out here.    • How to fix bad posture | FIX your posture ...   This is not to say that you should not try strengthening your wrist extensor muscles anyway. It could totally be a problem with weakness in the extensor muscles. So if you're posuture is in good standing you may have to strenghten your extensors. The 1st step for rehab: Try to break up the scar tissue first through manual massage. You can use a muscle stick to do self massage if you want to save money of phsyical therapy bills that will rack up. People seem to know more and more that massage breaks up scar tissue. However, people seem to forget that in the process of strengthening a muscle with even mild weight training we are literally breaking down muscle tissue. So strengthening the muscle is another way to break down the scar tissue. I've rehabbed so many injuries, some of them major injuries after surgery, with weight training and no massaging. So I come from the mindset that breaking down a scarred up muscle through weight training is more effective than massaging. We want to strengthen the muscle effected by this condition. Usually there will be pain during wrist extension and supination. (Supination is when you turn your hand over). Therefore we want to work the muscles that are assisting these movements. This way we can strengthen and tighten those muscle back up. This will relieve a lot of pain. One of my favorite exercises for this is done with a wrist roller. You lower the weight slowly and roll it back up. It may be too intense at first to roll it back up. If that is the case then just start rolling it down. Try to work your way up to being able to do this a couple times with really light weight. Don't attach more than a 2.5lbs in the beginning.
