The History: In the 1940s, Mt. Norquay purchased and installed an early single chairlift up the North American run. This chairlift served a few (steep) runs, as well as the newly constructed cliffhouse bistro. The single chair served the resort well, until the 1960s when a Poma double chairlift replaced the single chair. The Poma double was also equipped with Giovanola cabins in the summertime, turning the lift into a "pulse chondola" of sorts. Then, sometime in either the 70s or 80s, Norquay decided that they wanted to modernize this iconic double chairlift. So, they hired the European company Garaventa to overhaul the lift. Garaventa replaced the top bullwheel, the lifting frames, the sheaves, the tower arms, the chairs and some of the drive mechanics. They kept the top terminal frame of the Poma double, and the bottom terminal structure was also kept mostly intact. Curiously enough however, the bottom terminal sports a Mueller bullwheel. In 2012 or 2014, the lift was converted from a conventional chairlift to a unique pulse double chairlift (along with a name change from "Norquay Chair" to "North American"). The lift slows down every time a group of chairs enters a loading or an unloading zone. Even with this however, it is still a 7 minute ride to the top. This lift also runs winter and summer, serving the Cliffhouse Bistro up top and the Via Feratta in the summer. The Lift: This is a Garaventa pulse double chairlift with Poma elements. There are 14 towers, and 36 chairs.
