In Tribhuvan University, there are several faculties and institutes, and amongst them, one is the Institute of Engineering. The total number of constituent campuses under the Institute of Engineering is five and ten affiliated private colleges. Pulchowk Campus still maintains the status of central campus for the Institute of Engineering. Pulchowk Campus was established in 1972 AD (2029 B.S.) and is situated at Pulchowk in the heart of Lalitpur City. It was initially established to produce trade-level manpower to meet the engineering needs of the nation. This campus has been offering a three-year diploma course in different branches of engineering, which is an intermediate-level course, from 1973 onwards, and has been subsequently phased out. Pulchowk Campus has been offering bachelor's degree programs in various engineering disciplines since 1984 (2041 B.S.). Till 1984, Pulchowk Campus trained low- to middle-level engineering professionals in areas such as Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture till 1984 (2041 BS). However, due to the growing demand for highly qualified engineering professionals at both the national and international levels, a four-year Bachelor's program in Civil Engineering was offered on this campus in 1984. In addition, in 1994 (2051 B.S.), bachelor's level programs in Electrical Engineering and Electronics Engineering, and in 1995, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture were offered while in 1998 Computer Engineering was offered (2055 B.S.). These BE programs were first of their kind in Nepal. Presently, Pulchowk Campus is offering bachelor's and master's degree and Ph.D. programs in various engineering disciplines. At all levels, the medium of instruction is English.
