What do Pileated Woodpeckers have in common with Beavers, Kelp, Coral, Elephants and Gopher Tortioses? They're ecosystem engineers. Here is the Northern Hardwood forests, they create homes for many other species of birds, mammals and insects as they forage for Carpenter Ants deep in the heartwood of many tree species. They're basically flying anteaters with specialized tounges and bills to get at a food source few others can access. I like to think of thier design as amazing technology acquired through thousands of generations of learning and adaptation. .. Drumming is what we call the rapid tapping patterns that woodpeckers make on trees. These are moreorless thier "songs" - in that they can't make musical, whistling songs. Drumming is used to tell other woodpeckers "I'm over here" or "Check out this action" etc. .. Did you know you can tell all the woodpecker species apart by thier unique drumming patterns? Watch and learn...
