Polypropylene mesh used in the repair of hernias are by design a foreign body which can induce severe local and systemic side -effects as part of the human body immune system attempt to destroy and remove the mesh. Since the mesh is not biodegradable, the immune system is left the impossible task of continuously trying to remove the mesh, which it cannot. As such, a local and systemic foreign body cascade effect occurs over the lifetime of the patient. The most common side-effects are chronic pain at the site of the mesh, inflammation, infection, and scar tissue formation. Systemic side-effects include chronic headaches, memory loss, and brain fog and symptoms which mimic or worsen underlying autoimmune diseases. Complications can be life-threatening, especially when the mesh involves delicate organs such as the intestines, bladder, and rectum. Severe and irreversible complications associated with non-biodegradable mesh are a well-known complication to their placement but are rarely discussed with the patient. Unfortunately, the patient is very often left to suffer greater catastrophic problems caused by the mesh which are worse than those caused by the original hernia. Fundamental changes to the laws associated with proper patient Informed Consent must occur in order to stop these outcomes. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science...
