Recueillement, written "at the invitation of F. Florimo for the erection of a monument of Bellini in Naples," never rises above a forte dynamic marking. The second section, a brief chorale, leads to a strong cadence on C# major to begin the third section. Liszt experiments with alternate upper register patterns with low chords (mm. 59-68) as he varies the five-note melody that began in mm. 44.
