Armed with a freshly purchased Tyne & Tees Day Ranger - mine for the princely sum of only £16.90 with veterans railcard discount - I headed off to Teesside for another exciting day of freight rambling. I was there a little bit earlier than normal, which allowed me to get to Thornaby for the departure of 6M16, the Wilton trash empties, from Tees Yard. DB Cargo's 66021, complete with friendly waving driver, took charge of a rake of 21 FCA container wagons and an empty FCA tagged on the end. From there it was off to Eaglescliffe, where thanks to the power of social media the driver of 6N31, the daily steel slabs from Scunthorpe to Lackenby, already knew I would be filming. DB Cargo's 60059 "Swinden Dalesman" took charge of the train today. Next stop was South Bank, where I arrived just in time to see 6N68, the thrice weekly departmental working from Redcar Mineral Terminal to Tyne Yard. Today, as is typically the case, the train was headed by a DRS class 66 locomotive and consisted of a rake of loaded MRA side-tipping ballast wagons. 66421 took the honours today. 60059 "Swinden Dalesman", having shed its load and friendly driver, continued on to Lackenby, making an impressive waft of black clag as it passed by. DB's 66182 rounded the curve with train 6N40, the daily steel slabs from Tees Yard to Skinningrove. These are the same slabs that were dropped off by 6N31 earlier. Freightliner's 66520, the daily 4L78 from Tees Dock to Felixstowe, with its impressive rake of intermodal containers snakes over South Bank Junction. Finally it was off to Longbeck to see the return of the Skinningrove empties, 6N53.
