Of the four Vedas, the oldest is the Rig Veda, which we must locate towards the beginning of the Vedic Era, around the year 1500 BC. They constitute the Shruti, literally “what has been heard through oral communication”, the Tradition, that is, in Western terms: the Revelation. They are considered sacred literature and as such contain the standard of truth. Its function is thus similar to that of the Bible in the Western Judeo-Christian world. The Vedas profess a polytheistic religion made up of all-powerful Gods, who are divided into three groups according to their functions: sovereigns, warriors, production and fertility.
